Feeling the offer was unfair, he responded with a $10,000 counteroffer. Microsoft viewed the demand as an attempt to profit from its trademark and accused him of cybersquatting. After the dispute gained international attention in 2004, Rowe received widespread online support, with his website reportedly attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and supporters donating money toward a possible legal defense. The case never went to court. Rowe agreed to transfer the domain to Microsoft in exchange for an Xbox, games, Microsoft training, a developer network subscription, a trip to Microsoft’s headquarters, and help creating a new website. He later donated $5,250 of the roughly $6,000 raised for his defense to Canuck Place, a children’s hospice.
