If you’re just starting to learn a new skill - whether it’s going to the gym or training in a martial art like BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu) - the fastest way to get results is to hire a personal trainer for private, one-on-one sessions. I’d never taken any private lessons before, because I thought, “I know better,” but recently I did a few BJJ private classes (@NorbertDragan's recommendation) and - holy smoke - this is a whole other level of learning. It almost feels like a cheat code, because all the attention is on you, so you’ll have the shortest learning curve. Compared to a group class of 30 people, where you have to learn by watching and then try to replicate moves on your own. Plus, it’s much more fun and enjoyable when the program is tailored specifically to you, taking into account your strengths and weaknesses. For example, I’m very inflexible, so during the first 15 minutes of every session we focus exclusively on stretching. My instructor also mentioned that some top BJJ gyms won’t let you join group classes until you’ve completed at least ten private sessions - because skipping that foundation often leads to more injuries, less enjoyment, and unnecessary frustration.
