Dropped my son off at Reading Festival today, but not before having a conversation I desperately wish I didn't have to have with my child. He's visibly Brown. He's Muslim. And in the current climate, that can carry risks I never want him to have to think about. So I had to talk to him about being aware of his surroundings. About trusting his instincts. About what to do if someone targets him because of how he looks or what they assume about him. I hate this. I hate that while other parents are worrying about whether their kids have enough money, sunscreen and phone battery, I'm having to talk to mine about the possibility of being targeted because he is visibly Brown. He should just be going to a festival and enjoying being young. That's it.
