If you're against sending British kids to die in foreign wars, fair enough. Then be against ALL war consistently. You don't get to be a patriot only when someone else is doing the fighting.

Dropped my son off at Reading Festival today, but not before having a conversation I desperately wish I didn't have to have with my child. He's visibly Brown. He's Muslim. And in the current climate, that can carry risks I never want him to have to think about. So I had to talk to him about being aware of his surroundings. About trusting his instincts. About what to do if someone targets him because of how he looks or what they assume about him. I hate this. I hate that while other parents are worrying about whether their kids have enough money, sunscreen and phone battery, I'm having to talk to mine about the possibility of being targeted because he is visibly Brown. He should just be going to a festival and enjoying being young. That's it.

But I have a very simple question: What exactly do Maccabi Tel Aviv fans have to do with the British Jewish community? Maccabi Tel Aviv is an Israeli football club. Its supporters are Israeli football fans. British Jews are not collectively responsible for, nor representative of, Israeli football supporters. If the concern was public safety, then surely the relevant question should have been about the actual behaviour, intelligence and threat posed by the specific group attending the match. Why are British Jews being brought into the equation? And this is where the whole thing starts to feel deeply uncomfortable. We should be able to distinguish between Israeli nationals, an Israeli football club and British Jews without conflating the three. Otherwise, aren't we effectively saying that criticism or policing of Israeli football supporters somehow requires consultation with Britain's Jewish community? That's a very dangerous line to cross. And given the political sensitivities surrounding Israel, the public is perfectly entitled to ask whether this entire affair was really about policing and public safety or whether something much more political is going on.

The more I think about Zelenskyy praising Netanyahu, the angrier I get. British taxpayers have been asked to shoulder billions for this war, around £25 billion committed to Ukraine, while people here are struggling to make ends meet. And after all that, we are expected to sit quietly while Zelenskyy backs Netanyahu? No. I'm done with this charade. You cannot demand endless solidarity, money and weapons from ordinary people while openly embracing a leader accused of some of the gravest crimes imaginable. That is a red line for me. Not another penny of British taxpayers' money. Britain first.
