Today marks 51 years since the canonisation of Saint Oliver Plunkett
The Archbishop of Armagh, Primate of All Ireland, successor to Saint Patrick, was martyred for his Catholic faith
The depraved savagery of his martyrdom took place at Tyburn, London, he was hanged, drawn and quartered, his dismembered remains set on fire and buried in the ground before his head was later brought back to his native Ireland
At his canonisation in 1975, Pope Paul VI greeted the pilgrims in Irish:
'Dia is muire Dhíbh, a chlann Phádraig! Céad mile fáilte rómhaibh! Tá Naomh nua againn inniu: Comharba Phádraig, Olibhéar Naofa Ploinéad. (God and Mary be with you, family of Saint Patrick! A hundred thousand welcomes! We have a new Saint today: the successor of Saint Patrick, Saint Oliver Plunkett)'
