I was sitting in a hospital lobby when an older man sat beside me.
He looked nervous.
I asked if everything was okay.
He said,
โI've been waiting for my daughter for three hours.โ
We started talking.
He told me she was 35 and that they hadn't spoken in almost a year.
I asked why.
He said they had argued.
Then he sighed.
โShe told me never to contact her again.โ
I asked why he was waiting for her.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box.
โI wanted to give her this.โ
I assumed it was jewelry.
It wasn't.
