There is now set to be at least nine democratic socialists in Congress. Donovan McKinney – alongside Melat Kiros, Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander, and Chris Rabb – will join Bernie Sanders, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Heartbroken by the news that Ousmane Diallo passed away. My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and everyone who knew and organized alongside him. His loss will be felt uptown. I wanted to share some words about who he was to our community. I first got to know Ousmane while canvassing together for Zohran, where he never missed a shift in Harlem. He wasn't someone who sought attention, but he had a way of talking to everyone, and people opened up to him easily. Community elders, organizers, and leaders uptown all knew and respected him. When I announced my campaign, he was immediately on board and canvassed for us. During one tense canvass, I found myself boxed into a circle of hecklers, unable to see a way out. Ousmane reached through to give me his hand, pulled me out, and got me safely to a car — calm and steady the entire time. When I tried to thank him afterward, he brushed it off: "you don't even have to thank me, it was nothing." That was the essence of who Ousmane was: showing up for people quietly, in moments where they feel alone or scared, without expecting anything in return. Ousmane was a lifelong Harlemite who gave his time to the organizing work that holds our community together. He'll be remembered by many of us who were fortunate to cross paths with him on the doors, at poll sites, on the street, or at community events across Harlem. Rest in Power Ousmane. Allah Yerhamo.

My heart is with Harlem today. The Kingdom Games celebrate basketball, community, and joy. Instead, family and friends are mourning Kinu Rochford, and two more of our neighbors are recovering from gunshot wounds. I'm praying for Kinu's loved ones and for everyone affected by last night’s shooting.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo lived in this country for the last 35 years. He was a father of three, a husband, and a beloved member of his community who worked in construction and put his kids through college. He spent his life building his community from the ground up and dreamt of one day building a home of his own. Instead, Lorenzo was brutally murdered by ICE this week, while they were in pursuit of someone else. Another neighbor and loved one targeted and reduced to a headline. Time and time again, we have said that ICE's terror is making us less safe. This is an important reminder of why we must abolish ICE altogether. How many more people will be killed or kidnapped by ICE before they are held accountable? I support House Democrats and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) in calling for an investigation into ICE's murder of Lorenzo. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya ran one of Gaza's last hospitals. He refused to leave his patients even after Israel killed his own son in a drone strike. Israel kidnapped him for it. 18 months in detention, tortured and beaten, for the crime of running a hospital. He must be released.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya refused to abandon his patients in Gaza. He buried his own son in the hospital courtyard after he was killed by an Israeli drone that struck the entrance of Kamal Adwan Hospital. He kept the hospital running through Israel’s brutal 85-day siege, and didn’t stop fighting for his patients even when the Israeli military raided the hospital and kidnapped dozens of hospital workers. For that, the Israeli military kidnapped him a year and a half ago, and now he's been beaten, starved, thrown in solitary, and is in critical condition — all for trying to save Palestinian lives. In his last meeting with his lawyer, Dr. Abu Safiya said “They brought me here to kill me.” Dr. Abu Safiya must be released immediately, along with the thousands of Palestinians the Israeli government is holding without charge or trial, who are now at risk after the Knesset passed a law that allows the death penalty for Palestinians. Kidnapping one of Gaza's few remaining doctors while bombing its hospitals and killing over 1700 health care workers is yet another facet of Israel’s genocide — and it is being carried out with American weapons, paid for with our tax dollars. Palestinians have survived three years plus a century of ethnic cleansing, genocide and aparthied. Enough is enough. In Congress, I will fight tooth and nail to cut off the endless flow of weapons and American taxpayer dollars to Israel as it violates countless international laws and indiscriminately bombs civilians across multiple countries at once.

Happy Independence Day! Today I am thinking of all who have worked — and still do — to make our nation one that more fully lives up to our ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Uptown and the Bronx carry that legacy. Our neighborhoods were made by people who were promised nothing and organized for everything. A more perfect union is possible, but it is on us to achieve it.
