We and our lawyers have met with Chair of the @EHRC Mary-Ann Stephenson to raise our concerns relating to the implementation of the Supreme Court's ruling, NHS Trust policies, and the treatment of professionals holding Christian and gender-critical beliefs. Among the issues we raised were: 🔹 NHS policies that may conflict with the rights of staff and patients under the Equality Act. 🔹 The difficulty of establishing accountability when individual NHS Trusts adopt similar policies, despite responsibility appearing to sit at Trust level. 🔹 Concerns arising from cases such as that of Darlington nurses, Sandie Peggie and Jennifer Melle, which raise questions about whether healthcare professionals are being treated detrimentally because of their protected beliefs. 🔹 Whether regulatory bodies, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), are adequately safeguarding the rights of registrants with protected philosophical beliefs. 🔹 The need for clear evidence where individuals are being singled out because of their beliefs, rather than concerns simply being dismissed as organisational failings. As the EHRC's revised Code of Practice comes into effect, these questions cannot be ignored. Public bodies, NHS Trusts and regulators must ensure that equality law protects everyone, including those whose beliefs are unpopular or contested. The experiences of the Darlington nurses demonstrate why transparency, accountability and equal treatment under the law remain so important. BREAKING: County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is refusing to rule out taking disciplinary action against the Darlington nurses despite an employment tribunal finding they were unlawfully harassed. President of the Darlington Nursing Union, said: “After everything we have been through it is astonishing that the Trust is still refusing to rule out taking disciplinary action against us. “The trust has apologised. It has paid damages. It has accepted our concerns were not properly heard. An employment tribunal found we were subjected to harassment and unlawful discrimination.
