I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion about whether to buy $TSLA or $SPCX with some people even considering selling $TSLA to buy $SPCX. While this is not financial advice, here’s what I am doing and a few things worth thinking through. The first (and most important) question is do you believe a Tesla/SpaceX merger is likely within the next year or two? I believe they will merge mainly because of the strategic overlap in autonomy, robotics, energy, and long-term multi-planetary goals, plus Elon’s control of both companies. That said, I could easily be wrong. If a combination does occur, the long-term difference between holding one or the other shrinks considerably. Assuming you are investing in a taxable account, the next major factor is taxes. Selling $TSLA triggers capital gains tax + the 3.8% NIIT + state/local taxes. The combined rate can easily land in the 30–40% range depending on your situation and holding period (short-term rates are significantly worse than long-term). A useful way to frame the decision is that if you pay ~35% in taxes to switch, $SPCX needs to outperform $TSLA by roughly 54% just to break even on an after-tax basis (before even considering the time value of the tax money that is now gone forever). Note that this tax friction largely disappears inside a retirement account. What am I doing? I am content with my essentially all-in $TSLA position and have not sold a single share to buy anything else. I have always wanted direct exposure to the SpaceX mission for personal/mission-alignment reasons. So I’m using a portion of my retirement brokerage to free up some cash and buy a small $SPCX position. Note that I also added to my $TSLA position during the recent sharp dip. I still find it hard to pass up buying more when it’s on sale. Again, this is not financial advice. The right answer depends heavily on your time horizon, tax situation, conviction on a potential merger, and whether you value mission exposure independently of returns. It is fascinating watching someone drive a car made by XYZ company and say that their car drives itself too like Tesla’s FSD. You can ask them does it drive you from one destination to another with just a push of a button? Meaning does it drive itself out of the driveway, on to the highway, off the highway, and then parks at your destination? They say yes. We KNOW this is a lie. Autopilot on other vehicles is mainly restricted to highways and even then there are often strict conditions. Is it cognitive dissonance or denial that causes one to lie so badly? 🤔 I steer clear of such people because who knows what else they lie about. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Imagine being Elon Musk for a moment. You work harder than 99% of people, when you don’t have to, pouring everything into advancing humanity, reshaping what it means to truly live, delivering global internet access so brilliant minds in the most remote places can join the conversation, ushering in an age of abundance that lifts everyone, saving lives, and making life multi-planetary. Along the way you give people with quadriplegia and paraplegia the ability to control computers with their minds, restore sight to the blind, slash soul-crushing traffic, and far more. As a side quest, you defend free speech and push back against the woke mind virus. Yet every time $TSLA dips, a small but loud mob of emotional critics, blinded by ego and lack of accountability, comes out with pitchforks. The media lies about you constantly. Short sellers who would sell their own mother for a profit say and do anything. Fund managers blame you when their clients get emotional and they miss their quarterly bonus. Governments, politicians, and the legacy institutions your companies are disrupting wish nothing but ruin on you. That kind of weight has to press heavily at times.

My grandfather, communism, and the tremor that never left. A story I rarely share. He was the principal of a private school; respected, steady, a man who believed in books and order. The crack of pistols split the air. Each body fell with a heavy thud into the dirt. Each crack of the pistol meant it was getting closer to his demise. My grandfather stared straight ahead as the man beside him collapsed. He felt the warm steel of the pistol press against the back of his skull. Time slowed. This was it, the final second of his life. Then, fate intervened. He lifted his eyes and saw a column of troops marching down the road. At its head walked a general. A childhood friend. With a scream of desperation, he called out his name. The general was startled but recognized my grandfather and immediately spared his life. Tears streamed down his face. His entire body shook violently as he sprinted home. He grabbed his wife and children with nothing but the clothes on their backs and fled that very hour, leaving behind their home, their belongings, their entire life. Everything was taken away by the regime in a single afternoon. From that day forward, an uncontrollable tremor gripped his right hand. It was particularly noticeable whenever his emotions got the better of him. The shaking never stopped. It followed him across oceans and time until the day he passed. That is communism. It is not theory, not idealism, but the pistol at the back of the head, the burning books, the shattered lives. Do not let anyone sell you a nightmare dressed up as a wonderful dream. The people now sowing socialist and communist poison in America are exactly what President Trump warned: the greatest threat to our free world.
