California schools could soon close for two Islamic holidays under a bill moving closer to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk. The legislation formally recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, allows public schools and community colleges to close for both holidays and lets state employees use existing paid holiday credits to observe them. Supporters call it equal treatment for Muslim families. A conservative Christian group opposing the school provisions argues California law doesn't offer comparable language allowing schools to hold exercises celebrating Christmas, Easter or Good Friday.
