The Last Voice Note 1. Every night, Daniel sent his mother a voice note before going to bed. “Goodnight, Mum. I love you. I’ll call tomorrow.” It had become their little routine. 2. One Tuesday night, he was too tired to call. His mother sent him a message: “Don’t forget your mother still exists. 😂 Goodnight, my son.” He smiled and replied: “Tomorrow, Mum. I promise.” 3. There was no tomorrow. Daniel was involved in an accident on his way to work the next morning. His mother found out from a stranger who called from his phone. 4. For weeks, she couldn't bring herself to delete their conversations. She replayed every voice note. Again. And again. Especially the last one. 5. “Goodnight, Mum. I love you.” She would put the phone against her chest and whisper: “I love you too, Daniel.” 6. Six months passed. His mother finally decided to clean out his room. She opened his wardrobe and found an old envelope hidden inside one of his jackets. Her name was written on it. 7. Inside was a letter. “Dear Mum, If you're reading this, I probably didn't get the chance to say goodbye properly.” She immediately started crying. 8. The letter continued: “I know you always worry about me. Please don't spend the rest of your life blaming yourself for things you couldn't control.” 9. Then she reached the final paragraph. It said: “There's something I've never told you. Every night when I said ‘I love you,’ I wasn't saying it because it was our routine.” 10. “I said it because you were the best thing that ever happened to me.” She couldn't continue reading. She pressed the letter to her face and sobbed. 11. Then she noticed something strange. At the bottom of the letter was a date. Tomorrow. The letter had been written the night before his accident. 12. She looked at her phone. Her son's last voice note was still there. She played it one more time. “Goodnight, Mum. I love you.” Then, for the first time, she noticed something in the background. 13. A little girl laughing. Her mother's heart stopped. Daniel had never mentioned having a daughter. 14. She called the number that had contacted her after the accident. A woman answered. “Hello?” His mother whispered: “Who is the little girl in my son's voice note?” There was silence. Then the woman said: “That's not a little girl.” 15. “That's your granddaughter.” And Daniel had spent his final months secretly trying to find the mother of the child he never knew existed.
