Scott Bessent gets it. He cites the real numbers, folks. A million gone from the workforce, mostly via self deportation. Those self deportations only happened when Border Patrol did interior enforcement. That created the credible risk. Kill the magnet, and people leave on their own. Volume drives the wage and rent gains. Mark Mullin doesn’t. Under his model, he sticks to “worst of the worst.” That’s directly out of the old Obama playbook where the already convicted are prioritized. Regular illegal aliens go free, and call it toughness. Result? Soft ceiling. Most stay. Self deportation stalls. De facto amnesty with better branding. Bessent measures the system that scales. Mullin sells the one that doesn’t.
