On this day, 9 June 1957, four Austrian climbers made history on Broad Peak (8,047 m) in Pakistan's Karakoram. Led by Marcus Schmuck, the team of Hermann Buhl, Fritz Wintersteller, and Kurt Diemberger achieved the first ascent of the mountain without using supplementary oxygen, high-altitude porters, or fixed camps. Their expedition was revolutionary for that time. Rejecting the large siege-style tactics common on 8000-meter peaks, the four climbers carried their own loads and climbed in lightweight alpine style. After an earlier attempt reached only the forepeak, they returned on June 9 and all four stood on the true summit, becoming the first team to place every member atop an eight-thousander. Just 18 days later, tragedy struck. While attempting the unclimbed Chogolisa (7,654 m) with Kurt Diemberger, Hermann Buhl fell through a collapsing cornice high on the mountain and disappeared into the mists of karakoram forever. BREAKING: Dawa Sherpa, A Nepali climber who went missing above Camp III on Mt Everest since last week, has been found alive after a miraculous survival and making an extraordinary descent alone from high on the mountain He was discovered this morning near Crampon Point by an SPCC garbage management team while crawling toward base camp suffering from frostbite and severely weakened. On this day, 2 June 1953, the world awoke to the news that Mt Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, had finally been climbed. News of the first ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary spread across the globe, bringing to an end decades of attempts, and uncertainty surrounding the world's highest peak. What took place high on Everest on 29 May 1953 soon became one of the defining moments in the history of mountaineering.

On this day, 25.05.1955; British climbers Joe Brown and George Band made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third-highest mountain, during the 1955 British Kangchenjunga Expedition led by Charles Evans. In respect of local spiritual beliefs in Sikkim, the pair famously stopped just a few feet below the true summit rather than standing on the highest point, a tradition many climbers still honor today. Interestingly, Kangchenjunga was considered by many mountaineers of the era to be an even greater challenge than Everest itself. The expedition established six camps above Base Camp on the remote Yalung Face, relying on supplementary oxygen and crucial Sherpa support to overcome one of the Himalaya’s most feared peaks. The mountain remained unclimbed again for more than two decades, until the second ascent in 1977. The first ascent without supplementary oxygen did not come until 1979, achieved by Doug Scott, Peter Boardman, and Joe Tasker via a new route. On this day, 18.05.2025; British climber Kenton Cool @KentonCool successfully reached the summit of Mt Everest (8848.86 m) for the 19th time, extending his own record for the most ascents by any foreign climber on the world’s highest mountain. Alongside him, Dorji Gyaljen Sherpa also stood on the summit, marking his 23rd successful ascent of Everest. The pair reached the top at around 09:15 NPT that day.
