After using my beloved Thomas Sowell against me to accuse me of using a leftist trick of assigning responsibility for the decisions made by individuals to an amorphous blob called "society", Laura unfortunately uses a leftist trick herself of pretending that someone who made a group-level statement meant that every single individual within that group would conform to the group-level statement. "So what you're saying ALL X are Y, Mr Bad Person?". I never at any point claimed to speak for all childless couples. I specifically said that speaking to friends and people we know, I can report that there are a lot (a lot, not all) of women who are not childless by choice and feel that in the joyous days of girlboss feminism they were not given the correct picture of the consequences of their life choices because instead of being taught about reality by society (by which we mean Hollywood and other movie industries, the arts, pop culture, the media, educators etc), they were indoctrinated into a worldview which has led them to a place other than the place they'd like to be. It's amazing that in the era of "we must listen to women" when you listen to women and report what they tell you, you're somehow "lying to women". As it happens, I don't think the cultural dimension is primary. I remember speaking to a villager in Uzbekistan driving me in his taxi who lamented that the next generation have fewer kids once they move to the city. My sense (not scientific claim) is that the declining birth rate has more to do with people being crammed into cities where life is increasingly incompatible with becoming a parent: extremely expensive, transient and anti-social. In the Human Zoo, Desmond Morris wrote about the fact that the same pathologies we see in human cities zoologists observe with animals in a zoo. I am not saying society's lies are why basically the entire world is not reproducing. It's just a part of it but it also matters.
