It was my honor to present this flag that flew over our capitol to Medal of Honor recipient Retired U.S. Army Colonel Gordon Roberts, a Vietnam War veteran, while visiting the Ralph H. Johnson VA Hospital in Charleston. Then-Sergeant Roberts was serving with the 101st Airborne Division in South Vietnam in 1969, when he singlehandedly charged, assaulted, and neutralized multiple enemy strongpoints while also moving wounded soldiers to evacuation areas. Colonel Roberts retired in 2012 after over 44 years of military service. The VA hospital is named after another Vietnam War veteran Ralph Henry Johnson who was killed in action in 1968. He risked his life to save his fellow Marines when he jumped on an enemy grenade that was thrown into his position. His selfless action prevented the enemy from advancing past his patrol point and saved the lives of his fellow Marines. The sacrifices of our heroes will never be forgotten !
