The Dancing Israelis of 9/11 “Our purpose was to Document the Event.” Sivan Kurzberg, Paul Kurzberg, Oded Ellner, Yaron Shmuel, and Omer Gavriel Marmari. The five were detained on 9/11 after being seen celebrating, hugging, and high-fiving each other as they recorded the burning of the twin towers. They worked for Urban Moving Systems, an Israeli-owned moving company in Weehawken, New Jersey. Police found their van, searched and found cash (about $4,700 in a sock), and multiple passports. They were held for roughly 71 days, questioned by the FBI (including its counterintelligence section). They were deported for visa and work-permit violations and returned to Israel and began doing media tours to explain what they were doing. The company they worked for, the owner, Dominik Suter, he FLED the United States after an FBI search of the offices. The case moved to FBI foreign counterintelligence. Paul Kurzberg specifically had a background that raised flags (security work connected to the Jewish Agency, reluctance around a polygraph). U.S. officials later told The Forward and ABC News that the FBI assessed Urban Moving Systems was a possible Mossad front used to watch Arab targets in the U.S., and that at least two of the men had intelligence ties to Mossad. As the FBI was digging into these men… boom, an FBI memo dated September 24, 2001, dropped and “determined that none of the Israelis had any information on prior knowledge regarding the bombing of the World Trade Center”
