Crypto-native demand for equity exposure is exploding, with equity perpetuals surpassing $590B in 2026 YTD. Yet tokenized equities remain tiny at roughly $2.1B, despite a $151T+ global listed-equity market. So why is onchain equity exposure growing so quickly while actual ownership remains fragmented? The answer lies in market structure. Let’s break it down. — ● Demand arrived before ownership Equity perpetuals surged from $16B in 2025 to more than $590B in 2026 YTD. Yet actual tokenized equities remain around $2.1B, representing just 0.0014% of the $151T global listed-equity market. The gap matters because demand for equity exposure is clearly growing much faster than demand for direct onchain ownership. — ● Three different models of tokenized stocks Tokenized stocks are not all structured the same way. The key difference is what the token actually represents. • Issuer-sponsored The token is the share itself, carrying ownership, voting rights, dividends and corporate actions, as seen with @Bullish and @Securitize. • Custodial / entitlement The token represents an indirect security entitlement, while the underlying share is held through an intermediary, as seen with @DinariGlobal and @coinbase. • Synthetic The token tracks the stock’s price without directly representing the underlying share, with @Ondo, @xStocksFi and @binance’s @bstocksfinance using wrapper-based structures. — ● Three platforms control 88% of the market Tokenized stocks and ETFs have reached roughly $3.46B in market value but @OndoFinance, @xStocksFi and @bstocksfinance account for around 88% of it. • @OndoFinance: 37% • @xStocksFi: 27% • @bstocksfinance: 25% This creates two different leaderboards. Liquidity and distribution are concentrated in wrappers, while direct ownership infrastructure is being led by platforms like @Bullish, @Securitize and @Superstate. — ● Why wrappers win first Wrappers solve the easier problem. They give investors equity exposure without having to recreate the full legal structure of actual ownership. An issuer-sponsored token must: - represent the actual share - update the shareholder register - carry voting rights and dividends - process corporate actions - enforce transfer restrictions - comply with securities law That makes direct ownership harder to scale. It also creates the key trade-off. • Rights-rich assets Issuer-sponsored tokens offer actual ownership and shareholder rights, but KYC and wallet whitelisting limit permissionless DeFi composability. • Composability-rich assets XStocks, Ondo and bStocks can integrate more easily with DEXs, lending markets and collateral systems, but provide weaker ownership rights. Rights come with restrictions but composability comes with compromises. — ● The transfer agent matters more than the blockchain The blockchain can record ownership onchain but the transfer agent controls the official shareholder register. Company -> Transfer Agent -> Onchain Register -> Token It handles KYC, shareholder records, corporate actions and compliance. @Equiniti supports nearly 3,000 issuers and more than 20M verified shareholders, which shows why the registry layer is such an important part of tokenized-equity infrastructure. — ● BLSH is the proof-of-concept BLSH shows how an actual public-company share can move onchain. @Bullish share → @Equiniti transfer agent → @solana onchain register → KYC’d wallet → Whitelisted transfer BLSH’s full cap table is onchain, with live trading beginning on Bullish Exchange on August 12, 2026. Stablecoin settlement also enables near-instant trading beyond traditional market hours. This is what separates issuer-native tokenization from simply wrapping an existing stock. — ● Tokenization is advancing, but not toward permissionlessness The regulatory path for tokenized securities is opening, but permissioned infrastructure remains central. • Dec 2025 : @SECGov DTC tokenization pilot • Jan 2026 : SEC tokenized-security framework • Mar 2026 : @Nasdaq approval • Jul 2026 : @The_DTCC live production transactions • Sep 2026 : SEC five-year Innovation Exemption But the September exemption still requires permissioned access, transfer restrictions, issuer protections and regulatory compliance. So securities are moving onchain, but the legal rails remain permissioned. — ● The bigger battle is who controls equity onchain Stocks are already being tokenized and the more important question is who controls that representation. • Option A: Tokenize its own shares The issuer controls the register, shareholder rights, corporate actions and onchain distribution. • Option B: Do nothing Third parties create wrappers and control how the equity is represented, traded and distributed onchain. That makes tokenization more than a technology decision. It is also a distribution and ownership decision. — Tokenized equities still represent only around 0.002–0.003% of the ~$152T global equity market. @Ondo, @xStocksFi and bStocks already control most of the liquidity and market value, while issuer-native models are beginning to build the ownership layer. The real opportunity is closing the gap between legal ownership, liquidity and DeFi composability.
