These particles can penetrate deep into the body — all the way to the cellular level. 🧬 Inside cells, nanoplastics damage mitochondria — the structures that act as the cell’s energy generators. Every cell functions only because mitochondria produce energy. This energy powers everything in the body — from cell division to hormone synthesis. 🔬 Recent research shows that mitochondria are especially vulnerable to nanoplastics. Because of their tiny size and electrostatic charge, nanoplastic particles can penetrate deep into cells and even accumulate inside mitochondria, disrupting their function. This condition is known as mitochondrial dysfunction. For comparison: 🦠 A mitochondrion is roughly the size of a bacterium, while nanoplastic particles are dozens of times smaller. ⚙️ Mitochondria generate energy through a process called cellular respiration.
