Dovie Eisner was born with a genetic neuromuscular disorder that left him wheelchair-bound and breathing through a tube. He spent his life fighting for the unborn, ripping apart the logic of assisted suicide, and becoming one of the most respected voices in New York's conservative intellectual circle. He passed away last week on Sept. 11 after slipping into a coma last year. He was a devil's advocate who could dismantle your argument, a man who ran up top-shelf bourbon tabs his friends were honored to cover, and a thinker who turned brutal suffering into humor and humanity at every turn. When we fight for the disabled in the womb, we fight for Dovie. When we fight against the killing of the light that assisted suicide represents, we fight for Dovie.

Jane Allen was suffering from anorexia. She traveled to Colorado seeking treatment. Instead, her doctor offered assisted suicide — a prescription for death. Her father intervened just in time. Jane began to heal — eating again, tapering off morphine. The anorexia clinic dropped her, calling her a “liability.” When Jane chose life, her doctors walked away. Assisted suicide isn’t healthcare. It’s preying on the sick and vulnerable.

"You must be really proud of me," he said, holding his piece in the NYPost. I was. Still am. Dovie was a remarkable man--brilliant, faithful, brave. He suffered heroically and didn't complain. We loved him. Still do. May he rest in eternal peace.

You are known and loved by God. A difficult truth to accept when you can barely tolerate being alone with yourself. But, there it is. Known and loved and desired. The very thing you can barely now believe, because your heart has become so calloused and drowsy with sin and disappointment and cynicism, giving the Christian message a veneer of something trite and naïve and Hallmarky, is true. Deal with it. Repent and believe in the Gospel.
