What BML is trying to do is commendable. There is an acute shortage of foreign currency because the government has failed to restructure debt or reduce USD spending. BML needs foreign currency to meet customer demand. So BML is working to buy USD from the parallel market, as the government will also not float the MVR. In short: 1. The government has no plan for debt restructuring. 2. The government cannot reduce USD spending, and 3. The government will not float the MVR. So, to keep the bank solvent, BML needs to acquire foreign currency.

I will be speaking at the England Bar Council on "Small Island Nations and the Climate Crisis" on Monday at 5:00 pm GMT.
Philippa Broom and the UK Conservatives were instrumental in building the MDP and multiparty politics in the Maldives. She was key in training and building the party’s first campaign teams. A pleasure to meet her on the MDP's anniversary.

The MDP’s expectation was to bring a system that separates powers and makes the government accountable. The 2008 Constitution failed to deliver that outcome. An elected President can easily bribe and influence the electorate to secure a super-majority in Parliament. That allows the President to manipulate the judiciary and independent institutions. We must pursue a ‘reset’ again. The MDP will deliver the change that the people deserve.

Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in India. During this long tenure we have witnessed not only the PM’s service to the people of India, but also India’s assistance to the Maldives and the region, which has helped economic growth and prosperity for our peoples. @narendramodi
