The NYPD has arrested Larry Montes, a 46-year-old man from the Bronx, in connection with this incident. Montes has now been charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime, among other charges.

Earlier this evening, an individual disrupted Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Manhattan. As synagogue security was escorting him out, he struck a member of the congregation, damaged synagogue property, and then spit at and headbutted a member of the security team. An NYPD sergeant working a paid detail at the synagogue immediately stepped in and took the individual into custody. I have spoken with the rabbi of the synagogue, and I’m relieved that no one was seriously injured. Those who were hurt were evaluated at the scene and are doing well. There are no known additional threats at this time, and additional NYPD resources have been deployed to the synagogue. The investigation is ongoing. I understand the sanctity of this space and its meaning for congregants. Central Synagogue is where I grew up. In joy and in sorrow, it has always been a place of comfort and peace. What happened there tonight is deeply painful. A place of worship should never be a crime scene.

This video of a rescue last night on the Brooklyn Bridge will take your breath away. High above the East River, NYPD ESU officers climbed onto the Brooklyn Bridge to reach a woman in crisis who was threatening to jump. For nearly an hour, they stayed with her, spoke with her, and waited for the moment they could safely pull her back from the edge. The care, courage, and compassion these officers showed was just extraordinary. May God bless them.

Whether it's on land, in the air, or on the water, the NYPD is there for every emergency. On Sunday, a seaplane carrying eight passengers made an emergency landing in the East River. The NYPD Harbor Unit quickly brought passengers to safety. No serious injuries were reported.

Today, the NYPD welcomed the newest members of the Emergency Service Unit — officers who earned their place in one of the most elite units in the country. Their work demands discipline, judgment, physical endurance, technical skill, and the ability to remain calm in the most intense situations. From hostage rescues to collapsed buildings, ESU handles some of the most complex and dangerous jobs in this city. When the public needs help, they call the police, and when the police need help, they call ESU. When that call comes, these new members of ESU will be there to answer it.
