I read a lot regarding the disputes between the Trump administration and the European leaders, in respect to immigration issues, climate, Ukraine ect.
Apparently the Trump administration has taken a position that disappoints and even insults the European liberal left elites greatly.
However, I think the major problem is from European leaders who have been delusional for a very long time, it is already to late for them to grasp the true global politcs picture.
1. For decades, the European media and elites keep firing at Trump and his supporters. For ordinary people, it can be alright but this position leaves the Europe liberal left very little room to earn trust and importantly maintain dialogue with the US rightwing business and political class.
2. The boomer generation (born right after WW2) from Europe have always a very deep-rooted delusion that EU values made an European identity. The foundation for that is not concrete however. In fact, ever since WW2 and during the period of cold war, US and Soviet are the major driven force to permit and tolerate German unification and EU development. The education however, told Europeans that it is common desire among all Europeans for democracy and freedom that made a powerful Europe as it is. Trump administration again and again put the hard truth to them, making the European elites very painful.
3. The real threat to Europe's future still lies deeply within itself. The war and Trump only expose the fragility and magnifies its key problems. I consider bureaucracy and irresponsible policy execution as the prior one to address. Immigration issues, business recession, and even high costs of life, can all largely be related to the very slow policy processing programs, as well as incompetent and inaccountable policy execution. If only the bureaucracy issue can be corrected, much of inconvenience and troubles that we experience in ordinary life can be greatly improved, resulting in better confidence and environment for development. Unfortunately the election campaign here focus too much on superficial social phenomon, and many politicians advocate simple, superficial, intuitive but very unplausible solutions to current crisis. I found it very hard for the next German election.
4. The current pain and struggles for Europeans are hard but necessary. Because the society has been too much old-time path dependent with too much stranded assets and behavior inertia. Only enough pain and trouble can trigger sufficient reflection for reformation and more clear path for future. European history is full of active thoughts and tests, but the next move requires courage to farewell some comfort zones and step into uncharted waters.
To make it very straightforward: I, and most Europeans disregard of their political beliefs, dont think US garrison troops in Germany is a notable reason for Germany's political disfunction and economic struggle. Examples like Musk's car factor in Germany, super-delayed airport built, notorious German train system, none of them are related to "sovereignty" and security matters. German and American relationship has been always in a way unlike what US with China. But Germany used to be very advanced under this relationship, which means the current issue sources from elsewhere.
