Bots are cheap. People are not. At the latest Polkadot sub0 event, Shawn Tabrizi (@shawntabrizi), lead developer for Polkadot at Parity Technologies and an Architect in the Polkadot Fellowship, sat down with @DefiantNews. Their conversation explored one of blockchain’s most difficult challenges: how to verify that an online participant is a unique human without exposing their identity. As bots become increasingly difficult to distinguish from real people, digital platforms need more than another CAPTCHA or account-verification process. Shawn explained how Individuality and privacy-preserving Proof of Personhood could establish that one participant represents one real person, rather than thousands of automated accounts controlled by the same actor. The objective is not to collect personal information, connect activity to a legal identity or create another centralized identity database. It is to prove uniqueness while preserving privacy. Solving this problem could unlock new possibilities across the Polkadot ecosystem: • limited free transactions for verified people • stronger resistance to spam and automated abuse • fairer governance and voting mechanisms • rewards distributed to individuals rather than wallets • digital communities built around genuine human participation Most blockchains currently rely on transaction fees or financial requirements to limit Sybil attacks. These mechanisms help protect networks, but they also create barriers to participation and can give greater influence to those with more capital. Proof of Personhood introduces a different model: access based on being human, rather than on how much money someone controls. This could make blockchain applications more accessible, harder to manipulate and better suited to real-world use. Its implications may also extend beyond blockchain, providing a foundation for digital services that need to distinguish genuine human participation from automated activity without compromising privacy. Systems designed around people rather than accounts, wallets and bots. The long-term opportunity is not simply to verify who is human. It is to build digital systems where participation is fair, privacy is preserved and every person is recognized as an individual rather than another account. That is what a more human internet could look like.
