Wednesday marks the start of sanfu, the hottest and most humid period of the year in China. Also known as China's "dog days of summer," sanfu typically lasts 30 to 40 days from mid-July to August. To mark the first day of sanfu, many people traditionally eat dumplings, a custom believed to bring good luck. Throughout the sweltering weeks, people also turn to cooling foods such as watermelon and mung bean soup, along with other practices, to help beat the summer heat.
