The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), working with European Athletics, has introduced new broadcasting guidelines aimed at reducing the sexualization of women athletes during TV coverage. - Avoid low-angle camera shots that unnecessarily focus on an athlete’s chest, buttocks, or crotch. - Avoid lingering close-ups of body parts unrelated to the sporting action. - Limit slow-motion replays that don’t add technical analysis or help tell the story of the event. - Prioritize camera angles that showcase athletic performance, technique, skill, and emotion instead of an athlete’s body. - Use framing that captures the full movement of an event whenever possible, rather than isolated shots of specific body parts. - Ensure replays are used for technical or editorial reasons, not simply because they create visually revealing footage. - Focus on athletes’ faces, reactions, and achievements, giving women the same professional treatment expected in coverage of men’s sports. - Encourage directors and camera operators to choose shots that preserve athletes’ dignity without reducing the quality of the broadcast or the storytelling.
