The Cattle Egret is a little sprite of the meadows and a young herdsman of the wetlands. Unlike other herons, they do not feed primarily on fish. Instead, they prefer to dwell in shallow wetlands and around marshes, feeding mainly on insects. They are particularly fond of picking off parasites and cattle lice from the backs of cattle, as well as catching grasshoppers, crickets, and other insects stirred up by the grazing herd. Often found accompanying herds of cattle and deer, they earned the name "Cattle Egret" and are affectionately known as the "herdsmen of the wetlands."
