Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR.
We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.

But his approach to China is fundamentally flawed.
Cooperation on AI safety is not a negotiation where the US uses leverage to bring China to the table. That approach will backfire, amplifying China’s distrust of the US on AI and making it harder to find areas of productive exchange.
There’s a limit to how much the US can change China’s behavior through power alone. In the end, we will need China to want to cooperate and address AI risk in a real way.

OpenAI took a flyer on seeing if their internal models could do it and cracked it in a week, only to find out Anthropic had not actually gotten there, and then offered co-authorship to the external academic Anthropic was working with anyway

Been trying Anthropic Fable 5.1 vs OpenAI Astra recently.
Pretty clear who the real winner is.
GPT-6 Astra recreated the Palace of Fine arts in Blender.
This is favorite building in San Francisco because it was built for the World's Fair in 1914 where the steam locomotive and telephone were showed off. It was a time when technology gave us all a deep sense of optimism for the future.
I feel like some of that sense has been lost since, but I hope models like astra can help restore it, and push us towards a more hopeful future.
