A gas station owner in New Zealand applied for a $100,000 bank overdraft. The bank made a typo and gave him $7 MILLION by mistake. He spent it all in 28 days, fled to China, and triggered an international manhunt. – Hui Gao owned a small gas station in Rotorua, New Zealand with his mother. In April 2009 he applied to Westpac Bank for a $100,000 overdraft to help run the business. – The bank approved it. But when the employee typed in the figure they added two extra zeros by mistake. – Gao woke up the next morning and checked his account. $7 MILLION was sitting there. – He called his girlfriend and told her he was "f***ing rich" and had MILLIONS of dollars. – They did not call the bank. – In less than 28 days the couple withdrew $6.8 MILLION from the account. Transferred it to accounts in Hong Kong and China. – Then Gao fled to Hong Kong. His girlfriend followed days later. They left behind her six year old daughter. – New Zealand police launched an international manhunt. Interpol also got involved. – He was eventually caught. Sentenced to four years and seven months in prison. – His girlfriend got nine months of home detention. – The court ordered her to pay back the money at $60 a week. – At $60 a week it would take her approximately 2,192 years to pay it back.
