Just had a chat with a founder friend doing $20m in property sales / year
When he spends time hiring or coaching, his own sales drop
He then gets uncomfortable and goes back to selling, leaving less time to build the business through his team
I asked:
- Can you keep growing through your own sales?
< Sure, but there’s a limit ofcourse
- Right, what would help the business sell more?
< Better hires and more coaching
- So you have to sacrifice ur own sales now to help ur team sell more for the business to grow?
< Right…
- Yeah, ur giving up revenue now, to work on the business and team, and make mich more later
< Yeah, when you put it like that… makes a lot of sense

This got me thinking about how important it is to know the tradeoffs ur making with your decisions
What short-term downsides are you willing to accept for a longer-term upside?
In trading, a good example is moving capital from one bet into a new longer-term one
Then the previous bet keeps running while the new one doesn’t
That makes you question your decision, and rotate back… even though your thesis hasn’t change
Knowing what you’re sacrifing in the short term, makes sticking with your decisions easier!
In business, trading, and in life
