"I used to play D&D in middle school. I am the same age as the Stranger Things kids. I do believe in societies that follow the rules." @WatchfulWaiter1
An interesting asymmetry: when rich egalitarians fail to give to particular individuals in need, socialists will excuse it on the grounds that poverty is a structural problem, but those same socialists will criticize employers for offering low wages to particular employees.
Enjoyed this analysis. I combine an appreciation for modern civilization with a contempt for our current politics. Technocapitalism and globalization have made life almost too difficult to screw up, though our thinkers and politicians are trying.
But I do have a concept of the dignity of a person.
Imagine someone who is smart, virtuous, honorable, and has had a good impact on the world.
If he suffers a traumatic accident and becomes completely dependent on other people and is no longer himself, I think euthanasia is the dignified choice. It’s not pure utilitarianism.
So I have a concept of dignity. It’s just not what most people who use that term mean, which is something like “preserve life at all costs.”
"Among households headed by someone 65 or older, those with a net worth of at least $1 million outnumber those below the poverty line by roughly two to one."
Americans are ridiculously rich.
" If you calmly weigh the social benefits of political hyperbole, carefully crunch the numbers, and grudgingly and sorrowfully conclude that it’s justified in specific cases, I’m all ears. But if you defend hyperbole with casual, undiscriminating delight, life’s too short to listen to you."
