How many different databases does your company currently use in production? I'm seeing some rather small companies with an impressive collection (multiple datalakes, analytics stores, OLTP stores). I wonder if thats the "new normal".

Another important bit here is: "Agents make it easy to migrate databases". Whenever I talked to a company that was on a DB that no longer delivered what they needed, the real blocker was never moving the data, it was always "but we'll need to spend months rewriting our app". Well, these months just became days. Add few weeks for testing and you are good to go to whatever database fits you well. And as Eric said, it changes not just the growth curve of SaaS. It also changes the margins. You are no longer paying for vendor lock-in. And for engineers it completely changes the "I don't want to use these cool features because of lock-in" part. Have fun with the cool features, get the most out of your DB, and move out when you need to.
