I was lucky enough to spend some time with the Leicester Tigers recently during the pre season phase of their preparations for the 2026/2027 season. A few things stood out immediately: the clarity of every session, the intent behind each drill, short, sharp coaching blocks, no dead time, no filler. What impressed me most was the live link between coaching and analysis. Drone footage and radio comms feeding directly between the analysis team and coaching staff in real time, decisions being informed and adjusted as the session unfolded, not reviewed after the fact. But the real marker of a high-performance environment was the coordination across departments. Medical, physio, sports science, coaching, performance, all moving as one joined-up unit, not siloed functions bolted together. From a skill acquisition perspective, this is what a genuinely representative environment looks like. Constraints shifting in real time based on live data, coaching cues adjusted on the fly rather than pre-scripted, athletes solving problems under conditions that actually resemble the game. Not blocked, isolated drilling, but a system designed to keep perception and action coupled throughout. That’s what elite actually looks like. Not one strong department, a system where every part talks to every other part in real time.
