I saw something today that genuinely shocked me. I was waiting for my friend on a silent road when I heard coughing near a tree. I walked closer and saw 4 children who looked barely 8–10 years old. They were tearing pages from their notebooks, rolling the paper, lighting it with matchsticks and inhaling the smoke like cigarettes. I was stunned. They did not have cigarettes, so they had created their own. I stopped them and told them I would call their parents and the police. The moment they heard that, they got scared and ran away. But what disturbed me most was this: Children rarely invent these habits out of nowhere. They copy what they see around them. If a child this young already knows how to roll something, light it and inhale it like a cigarette, we need to ask ourselves what they are being exposed to at home, on the streets and around older people. Today it was notebook paper. Tomorrow, what will it be? We need to pay attention before curiosity becomes addiction.
