Software engineering was never about typing code
When I was on the VS Code team, engineers often drove new product features. The backpressure came from demoing our work live every day in standup. New features had to solve a real problem, fit into the product, and improve developersโ workflows.
If you failed to tell a coherent product story for your feature, the code didnโt ship. Nothing trains product judgment like being roasted by your team every day.
Iโve spent the last year doubling down on everything around the code. Thanks @kentcdodds for a great conversation on the evolution of product engineering in the age of AI!

I can't really remember, it was a gradual "click".
Probably when I started thinking of it as a kind of "skills repository" that you can search. After that, the packages concept made perfect sense.
The only reason I use MCP most of the time, is that it's easier than skills to setup... And I don't want to have to set them up all over the place (since most skills required an API token, and that's annoying to manage).
Now I can move all over the place with my ai, and the only MCP I need is Kody.

Finally got stuck into kody by @kentcdodds and am RIPPING out MCPs one at a time.
This is wonderful. I'll go from 12 MCPs that I constantly have to toggle on/off to 2:
- Kody
- Laravel Boost
Then I'll start tackling skills.
Don't sleep on kody, this thing is incredible!

When you were writing software in your codebase, you felt the pain of friction and would grease the wheels as a result.
Now you're firing off dozens of agents and not watching what they're doing. Agents don't complain and they're not going to just tell you the problems that they're running into. They'll just work around them.
So you've got to ask your agents about that friction.
I've got a process for this that I'm going to make a video about eventually.

One thing @bot shows is that the "dumb zone" doesn't exist (if your harness is good). Everyone's got these bots (that are basically just cursor cloud agents) with massive conversations and regular compacting and it doesn't get dumb.
Cursor has always been good at this and I never experienced what other people called the "dumb zone" and I thought I was taking crazy pills with everyone talking about it.

When you buy a subscription to Kody, Kody searches for emails between us and hands that over to @bot which then uses Kody to draft an email to you as a thank you and to invite feedback then notifies me to make personal changes before sending.

This is how I trigger my grok bots from:
- Email
- Sentry
- Feedback submissions
- Package errors
- Discord
I think this is pretty sweet! It's behind a feature flag you can opt-into yourself on the docs page. If you'd prefer to keep secrets stored in your own password manager (like @1Password or @Bitwarden for example), you now can!
