I was the only employee who knew why the company fired Daniel. At least, that’s what I thought. Daniel had worked there for eleven years. He wasn’t the loudest person in the office. He wasn’t management’s favorite either. But he knew everything. Which clients were unhappy. Which contracts were about to collapse. Which executives were quietly fighting. And, most importantly, where the company’s money was going. One Friday afternoon, HR called him into a meeting. Twenty minutes later, he walked out carrying a cardboard box. Nobody knew why. By 5:30, his email was disabled. By 6:00, his access card stopped working. By Monday morning, management announced that Daniel had been terminated for “serious misconduct.” People whispered. Someone said he’d stolen money. Someone else said he’d leaked confidential information. I didn’t believe either. Daniel had trained me when I joined the company. So that evening, I called him. Me: What happened? Daniel: They finally found out. Me: Found out what? There was a long silence. Daniel: Don’t ask me that over the phone. Me: Daniel, you’re scaring me. Daniel: Check your email. Then he hung up.
