The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has exploited Wikipedia's anonymity rules to edit articles, according to the digital encyclopaedia's co-founder Larry Sanger. In an interview with German newspaper Berliner Zeitung, Sanger said that global governments and public relations firms have also weaponised the platform to push favourable narratives. "The powerful are very interested in Wikipedia," he said. He added that the site was identified early as a propaganda tool, accusing the CIA of altering content, with corporate groups like Wiki-PR said to have profited millions from covert edits. He also highlighted investigations showing that PR firms like Portland Communications rewrote entries for governments, sovereign wealth funds, and institutions like the Gates Foundation. Sanger argued that narratives favoured by entities like the World Bank and the World Economic Forum are presented as fact, while anonymous administrators purge perspectives that challenge them. He also warned that such distortions are influencing search engines and AI chatbots trained on the platform's text. Sanger left Wikipedia in 2002 shortly after it was founded and has been described as the digital encyclopaedia's "most outspoken critic". Since 2020, Sanger has accused Wikipedia of having a left-wing ideological bias. This may explain why Sanger also claimed that Wikipedia's coverage is "very one-sided" in favour of P*lestinians. Despite previously labelling Wikipedia's founder Jimmy Wales as a "fraud" and a "liar," Sanger backed the latter's suggestion that the "G*za g*nocide" article should contain more of the Isr*eli perspective. It is worth noting that Isr*el has poured over $1 billion into influence campaigns since 2023, which includes a reported $9 million to a firm led by Brad Parscale, US President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign manager, to manipulate the narratives generated by AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. This involved the creation of nine specialised websites designed to feed AI models biased "information" that is intended to skew AI summaries on the occupation.

This is what occupation and colonial violence leaves behind, even when the headlines describe it as "liberation."
