Two companies. Same AI boom, the same wall of demand, a very different bill for it.
One is up about 219% this year. The other is down about 26%.
For three years the cost of borrowing barely mattered in this trade, because money was cheap. That is changing, and what now sorts the winners from the losers sits on the balance sheet.
Five stocks I break down this week report between August 26 and mid September.
Which side each one lands on, and the two where my numbers sit furthest from Wall Street, in my latest newsletter.

Moderna's cancer vaccine cleared Phase 3 and the stock jumped 90 percent in a day to $119.79, more than twice my 12-month target of $58.75. The trial was real; the market's reaction has already priced in a commercial success the company does not have yet.
TL;DR: My analysis rates $MRNA a Sell. The Phase 3 win is genuine, but the surge prices in billions of oncology revenue that the financials cannot support, and I value the stock at about half its current price.
The August 19 readout was the first Phase 3 success for any mRNA cancer therapy, and the science deserves the credit. intismeran autogene plus Keytruda beat Keytruda alone on recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival in melanoma. The platform works.
The problem is the price the market attached to that win in a single session. A 90 percent move to $119.79 takes the stock to 135 percent above the Street's pre-surge mean target of $50.84, with no new fundamental support. Twenty-three analysts were already at 16 holds and 4 buys before the readout, and their number has not caught up to a price that has more than doubled off the old anchor.
The financials are what the surge is ignoring. Trailing gross margin is negative 66 percent, operating margin negative 557.9 percent, operating cash flow about negative $1.1 billion, and consensus earnings are negative $8.51 a share this year and negative $4.90 next year. A Phase 3 win is a validation, not a revenue line, and the market cap is now $47.8 billion.
My scenarios weight to a $58.75 target: base case $55 at even odds, bull $95 at one in four, bear $30 at one in four. The base case assumes a miss at the November 5 print and a delayed next readout. That print is the first real test, when the stock has to justify a price it got on a headline.
What my analysis concluded. Act on your own.
Weak jobs would normally bring a rate cut to save them. But wages already lose to inflation, so that cut just pushes prices up more. That's when gold wins.
My read, not advice.
