A nice boost on HealthBench Professional, very impressive!
One thing I really like about OpenAI is how much they highlight the medical capabilities of their models.
Almost no other frontier lab does this. Even if they evaluate on medical capabilities it's often hidden in system cards.
On the other hand, OpenAI kept it in their main announcement post. They clearly care a lot about this.

OpenAI Foundation is an improbable organization – not just because of the resources behind it, but because of the uniquely consequential moment humanity now finds itself in.
Humanity is entering a technological transformation on the scale of civilization. AI is likely to reshape nearly every part of society. It feels uncomfortably grandiose to write the above, but building the OpenAI Foundation requires taking that seriously.
Our core operating model is to empower an ecosystem of organizations to create broad public benefit. We’ve already deployed hundreds of millions of dollars in our first five months, and our planned spending is in the billions.
Through our Life Sciences & Curing Diseases and AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy work, we fund organizations that apply AI to important problems in the world, from the Institute for Protein Design, developing new medicines, to the Health Coalition, working to transform delivery of public health in the US with AI.
We also fund efforts to reduce the risks that could prevent society from realizing AI’s benefits (we call it AI resilience). That landscape is broad: biological and cyber threats enabled by misuse, misaligned AI systems, the effects of AI on youth, and its impact on the economy. e.g. in case of bio risks, that would be supporting orgs like Blueprint Biosecurity working on pathogen-agnostic defense against airborne threats.
The Foundation will also be built differently, with AI deeply integrated into how we operate, make decisions, and get work done.
We are still at an embryonic stage. Our team has fewer than 20 people. Much of what the Foundation will become is dependent on the early decisions that we are making today.
That is what makes joining now unusual.
Our earliest hires will shape not only what we do, but how we work, what we value, what we are willing to attempt, and ultimately what kind of institution the Foundation becomes.

My cancer case is n=1. I'm not holding it up as a model, because most of what I did is not specifically replicable or scaleable. But it is a proof of concept that fully personalized medicine, built around one patient's own biology, is viable in ways it simply wasn't a few years ago. I have lived a version of the future of cancer care that I think is worth aspiring to more broadly.
Many of the tools that made this future possible for me are getting better, faster, cheaper, and more accessible every year. I think what we need next is the infrastructure to deploy these tools, and the community willing to build this infrastructure, one patient at a time.
I want to help that future arrive faster. I wrote an article in The Cancer Letter for the physicians and researchers closest to the patients who could benefit most from this approach, who also believe in this future. If you are working towards building the systems and practices that will make personalized medicine operationally real, we want to collaborate with you too.

We have paused some frontier RL training to ensure that we can meet the appropriate alignment, security and monitoring standards for the new level of capabilities in front of us. Model progress is now extremely rapid, and we always said we would take action if we felt that model capabilities were outstripping the pace of safety and alignment.
We care very deeply about AI safety. We believe the entire field will have to coordinate on shared safety standards, but will act unilaterally in the meantime.
We expect confidence in safety to increasingly set the pace of AI progress. We are optimistic about the alignment work we are doing, and we remain committed to making frontier capabilities widely available.

It’s super clear no one has solved alignment — consider joining OpenAI’s Alignment Team! We all have a lot of work to do!
This is a surreal moment. Few people could have predicted that the AI will advance to solving math problems at the highest level only a few years after GPT-2/3. The models then couldn't reliably solve grade school math problems. They barely were good enough to draft emails. They still very much felt like statistical parrots.
All things that looked like fundamental limitations slowly faded with some advances (e.g. high scale RL) in a span of a few years, which is really a short time. We should behold this moment both in awe and disbelief. What will a few more years of progress bring? How is it going to impact the world and society at large? Are we ready for the tsunami of intelligence at our fingertip?
More than any other moment, this feels to me like the eve of singularity. Glasswing & huggingface incident further increase the gravity.
A few years ago, deep down I felt working on alignment is premature. It's nice to do if it's your passion, but the shapes of things weren't clear enough for it to be critical in my opinion. The chances that you end up working on things that are useless for aligning the actual AGI was high. It's different now. Now, it feels like it's the most critical thing facing us.

I signed this. I spend much of my time thinking about how AI could help create a better future and making small steps towards that future. But if AI starts accelerating AI research itself, the pace of progress cannot be set by whoever is willing to move fastest. No single lab can safely govern the pace of AI self-improvement on its own–we need to build the capacity for international coordination and control mechanisms.
Pacing the frontier does more to secure the positive AI future than to risk it. I’m glad this is consensus across labs.

♥️ GPT-5.6 is a major step forward for health, both at the frontier and at cost.
These models push the frontier of performance per dollar, bringing the best health intelligence to all. The smallest variant, GPT-5.6 Luna, evaluated at the lowest reasoning effort, outperforms GPT-5.5 at the highest reasoning effort–despite costing 25x less. The largest variant, GPT-5.6 Sol, sets a new high bar at cost.
Another especially cool result: physicians found fewer flaws in GPT-5.6 responses than physician-written responses.
We collected diverse tasks that remain difficult for recent OpenAI models, across patient-facing and clinician-facing use cases. We asked speciality-matched physicians to write responses to these tasks with unlimited time and web access. We then asked other physicians to compare responses side-by-side, blinded to their source. Physicians were asked to comment on areas of improvement across five axes: accuracy, communication, completeness, instruction following, and health decision helpfulness. We then reported the fraction of responses across sources rated perfectly across all axes, across 20,000 total axis ratings. GPT-5.6 Sol appeared strongest, although all GPT-5.6 models performed significantly better than physicians.
