Same sign, different times.
I could do this all day
Gazelli Art House is pleased to announce the opening of its first permanent gallery in New York this September.
The most textured sign in Marfa I’ve found so far. Bonus graffiti glyph.
No bump to be found though.
A few work-in-progress details from There Will Be Signs.
Lines, strokes, hatching, patterns. Eventually, a symbol.
The generative works are built from repeated gestures: marks accumulating, crossing, shifting, and occasionally breaking their own rules.
Still teaching the system how to draw.
At a distance, the symbol holds together. Up close, the system starts to show.

Friends and Enemies
Each dot randomly chooses one friend and one enemy.
* At each step every dot moves 0.5% closer to the centre of the floor,
* takes a large step towards their friend,
* and a small step away from their enemy.
At random intervals one dot re-chooses friend and enemy.

A symbol is never just a symbol. Its meaning changes with material, scale, context, and location.
The generative works inform the sculptures. The sculptures feed back into the generative system. I’m interested in what happens in between.

GM. Exploring the edges of town.
I came to Marfa thinking about signs and symbols as systems of meaning, but I’m becoming just as interested in what happens to them once they enter the world.
They fade, tear, rust, disappear, get repaired, and gather meanings their makers could never completely control. Tonight this tiny flag was barely holding together, illuminated by the setting sun.
The symbol stays the same. The reading never does.

That cast iron skillet with the santa hat has a good story.
Just to be clear, TSA DOES NOT confiscate items. You’re given many options before you choose to voluntarily abandon an item. ⬇️
Studio visits are a bit different in Marfa.
For almost ten years I’ve been watching this sign lose information and gain meaning.
Not Marfa. New Jersey.
Today is our 15th birthday.
For 15 years, we’ve built and maintained independently with no institutional investors, sustained only by our members.
We (quite literally) would not be celebrating our 15 years if it weren’t for you.

Statistically speaking, I’m probably in this photo.
Spending part of each day walking around and photographing Marfa. Usually mornings and evenings as it is hot this August.
Afternoons are for working in the studio and reading in the casita, AC on full.
I’m interested in how visual languages develop over time, how a shape becomes a symbol, a symbol becomes familiar, and eventually we stop noticing that we learned to read it at all.
