兽蹲莲座是宋式香炉经典器型，叫“出香狮子/出香狻猊”。狻猊在《尔雅》里是一种可能杂糅了想象的猛兽，东晋郭璞表示它就是狮子。所以来源于佛教狮子元素的香炉上的兽，也被叫做了狻猊。至于龙生九子有狻猊说法，那就更往后了。
周密《癸辛杂识》：“白玉出香狮子，高二尺五寸，精妙无比”。
徐兢《宣和奉使高丽图经》记载的高丽青瓷“狻猊出香”：“上为蹲兽，下有仰莲以承之，诸器惟此物最精绝。”
