Continental Congress commissions Francis Marion, South Carolina’s “Swamp Fox”, as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army.
While traveling together, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin are compelled to share a bed.
Instead of sleep, the pair argue all night about whether to leave the window open or closed.
Franklin eventually wins the argument when Adams gets too tired and falls asleep.
Adams writes a lengthy and angry diatribe in his diary about it.

Captain Aaron Haynes is seeking several deserters from his company. The return of any of them will bring a five dollar reward.
Turtle, a “sub-marine” vehicle invented by David Bushnell and piloted by Sgt. Ezra Lee, attacks the British 64-gun ship HMS Eagle in New York Harbor.
However, the explosives fail to detonate and the attack fails.

American delegates (John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Edward Rutledge) meet with British Admiral Richard Howe to discuss peace in the revolution, but talks fail as Britain demands revocation of American independence.

Thomas Sprigg Wootton of Rockville, Maryland introduces legislation to create lower Frederick County as “Montgomery County.”
A hurricane hits Guadeloupe, killing more than 6,000 people. At least 100 French ships sink.
Congress formally agrees to entertain a peace meeting with British Admiral Lord Richard Howe.
Howe had been trying to negotiate with the Americans after the British victory at the Battle of Long Island last week. Congress insisted, however, that its representatives would meet him as representatives of the “free and independent States of America,” not merely as rebellious British subjects.
Now, he has agreed to a meeting. The first is tomorrow.

Dutch physician Anton de Haen, who in 1754 became one of the first physicians to discover that body temperature is related to illness and fever, dies in Vienna. He was 70.
Under cover of fog, Colonel John Glover and his Marblehead mariners evacuate General Washington's army of 9,000 men from Long Island to the relative safety of Manhattan.
The fog is thought to have saved the army from total annihalation, as the British gunners could not see the Americans through it.

George Washington holds a meeting with his generals on the subject of whether to abandon Long Island to the British.
Newspapers report that many of the Hessians coming to America to fight on behalf of the Crown are angered at false promises by the British who hired them:
“..they expected America was already conquered, and that they were only to come over and settle on our lands, for which reason they had brought their churns, ploughs, and being deceived, they have refused fighting, upon which account General Howe has shot one, hung five or six, and flogged many.”
