South Australia is leading the nation in the fight against illicit tobacco sales. With a record 923 inspections and 277 closure orders, plus tobacco smoking rates now at a historic low of 7.5%, we’re taking strong action to protect community health and crack down on criminal activity. Today @mbrownalp and I announced a new $3 million federal investment that will boost enforcement efforts, and help keep illicit tobacco and vapes out of our communities.

The first instalment of Mali’s Meat Tray ✅ What better way to hear from South Australians than a good old-fashion meat tray at the pub, all for a great cause in @VinniesSA. Thanks to the Woodcroft Hotel for having me and to all the local legends that stopped for a chat and a laugh. Where should we head to next?

This photo was the last time I had the privilege of spending time with Peter Buckskin. It was at the new Warriappendi School in February, where SA hosted Education Ministers’ Meeting. Peter reminded us all of the importance of ensuring equity is at the heart of every decision we make. And that the responsibility for Closing the Gap must not be considered a side project of our education system. For decades, Peter pushed ministers and educators to play our part to create a better future for the next generation of Aboriginal students. He was determined - and he got results. I won’t forget his role in saving Tauondi and securing its future. I was proud to deliver on our promise as the Skills Minister. Vale Peter Buckskin.

Today we celebrate the teachers, staff and school communities at the heart of Australia’s public education system. In our last term, I was proud to sign an agreement with the Albanese Labor Government to deliver $1.3b in extra funding for South Australian public schools over next ten years.

Hear what I had to say on ABC South East about the training facility we are building in Mount Gambier. Built in conjunction with Flinders University, this facility will double the number of medical students that can be trained for our regions 🔊👩‍🎓👨‍🎓

For generations, the LGBTIQA+ community have faced discrimination - simply for being who they are. South Australia has proudly led the nation in fighting against that discrimination.  Like being the first state to decriminalise homosexuality under Don Dunstan’s government.  And under the Malinauskas Labor Government we passed laws to ban harmful conversion practices.  But this progress can never be taken for granted.  That’s why International Day Against Homophobita, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) is so important.  Today - and everyday - I stand with the LGBTIQA+ community.  And I will always fight any attempts to wind back the progress we have made.

Meet Alyssa! Alyssa grew up in my neck of the woods in Golden Grove and studied at King's Baptist Grammar School - Wynn Vale but came to Bordertown for her training. She decided to stay because of the opportunities to upskill and learn from mentors like Geoff, who has volunteered for 35 years 🫡 She’s been here for 2 years now, and even convinced her partner to join who now works at the local school. It’s people like Alyssa that we need to support our regional communities, and make them great places to live and work!

We need to ensure we not only attract more people to vital teaching roles but also retain the services of the exemplary teachers who already work in our schools. This national campaign will inspire more people to join the profession of teaching and help amplify the stories of the brilliant teachers in our schools. Stacy Frogley from South Australia is a wonderful example of the power of teachers and the ability they have to change the course of a young person’s life – she is a terrific example of the high standard of teachers we have right across the country.
