We've long argued for a balanced approach to AI regulation. One that keeps humans in control. Since 2023, @Microsoft has advocated for "safety brakes" or an “off switch" that keeps advanced AI systems under human control. And it should ensure that AI systems that control critical infrastructure and autonomous systems be run in secure cloud infrastructure with layered safeguards that provide additional intervention points as needed. Put simply, powerful AI systems should always remain under human control, including interruption, correction, and shutdown. This approach is tried and tested. In the 1850s, Elisha Otis’ demonstration of a safety brake at the World’s Fair helped earn the public’s trust – and made modern cities possible. We should adopt this principle for AI. If we do, AI can become a powerful tool for human progress. If we don't, a lack of public trust, not regulation, will become the limiting factor that slows AI adoption.

Today, we’re launching Microsoft Community-First Grants, a new $1 million fund to support nonprofits that are not already directly receiving Microsoft grant funding and are addressing urgent community needs. We’re starting with organizations in King County, Washington, because our responsibility begins in the communities we call home but will expand to other regions of the state in the future. This is just the latest effort in @Microsoft's ongoing commitment to give where we live. I’m so proud to see the impact Microsoft and our employees made through the $1.9 billion we’ve provided to nearly 13,000 nonprofits statewide. Today, I stood with the American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten to announce the National AI Safety & Privacy Standard for Schools.  As outlined in our new agreement: "Children come first. Yesterday, @Microsoft was honored to join the @Mariners in recognizing first responders across Washington state whose courage, compassion, and dedication help keep our communities safe every day. We extended special thanks to the first responders who stood on the front lines to protect Spokane-area communities, support evacuations, and care for those affected by the fires. Microsoft and its employees also announced more than $200,000 in donations to support Eastern Washington wildfire response and recovery efforts through the Innovia Foundation's Eastern Washington Wildfires Response Fund and the North Central Washington Wildfire Recovery Fund. Their resilience and selfless service exemplify the very best of public service. On my recent visit to Riyadh, I saw firsthand how quickly the conversation is moving from AI ambition to putting it to work. By combining Microsoft's trusted AI platform with HUMAIN's Arabic AI capabilities, this partnership will help organizations across Saudi Arabia and beyond put AI to work in locally relevant ways, starting with bringing Arabic-language capabilities into enterprise workflows, with more to come.
