Now @SciGuySpace reports NASA is in a tizzy because after running the most successful launcher ever for more than a decade and nearing 1000 launches, @SpaceX is planning to retire Falcon in favor of Starship in a few years. Sorry, NASA, you've had 15 years to burn down the decadal survey with unconditional cheap reliable launch abundance. "Woah dude, now we have to adapt our plans for Starship? We were just becoming aware of Falcon!" This drives me crazy. For the SMD budget we could have had an orbiter, lander, and rover sent to every planet every year since 2016. Literally hundreds of spacecraft. The objections you hear to these ideas will boggle your mind. "We don't have the budget to operate 100 spacecraft." Somehow SpaceX runs a 10000 satellite constellation with like two guys and a shell script. "If we figure out how to run a fleet of spacecraft with just a few people, do you want to fire the current operations team?" Not to put too fine a point on it but a bunch of them are dying of old age and the ones under 40 are leaving JPL for jobs that pay a living wage. "Our cost estimation department doesn't know how to handle building more than one of something." My brother have you heard of mass production? "JPL's future business is Mars sample return and some outer planet moon mission." How's that working out? NASA exists in response to Sputnik and to guarantee our future among the stars is not run by communists. It is currently losing very badly.
