One of My Favorite Films of the Decade
Paul Greengrass is back in theaters September 11th with a new film called The Uprising & I think more people should be talking about it. Greengrass is a top-tier director & his filmography is filled with quality films. One of those films includes Green Zone, which reunited Greengrass with Matt Damon after their work on the Bourne franchise. Damon plays a U.S. Army officer hunting for Weapons of Mass Destruction during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It’s a gripping story with razor-sharp direction from Greengrass.

First Blood is the world’s introduction to John Rambo & introductions don’t get much more memorable than this film. Sylvester Stallone was somehow able to follow up the success of Rocky with First Blood & a new franchise that carried Stallone decades into the future. Rambo has to be considered one of Cinema’s best action stories. The rewatchability is infinite.

One of the Year’s Best Films
The Master & Magnolia would surely be the best film for 99% of directors walking this planet. For Paul Thomas Anderson, these are two films that rarely get mentioned as his best. I think most people look to Boogie Nights & There Will Be Blood as PTA’s best work - rightfully so, those are two flawless films - but The Master & Magnolia are each films that are worth joining the conversation. I don’t know how you can watch The Master without feeling like you’re watching the best acting ever put on screen.

Timothée Chalamet is looking to earn his 3rd consecutive Oscar nomination for Best Actor this year & regardless of whether he wins the award or not, just achieving three straight Best Actor nominations in a row (something Russell Crowe also did in the late ‘90s) is an incredible achievement. I’m curious if the Academy will give Chalamet his due for Dune, something they haven’t done up to this point.

Matt Damon is now only 4x more likely to win Best Actor at the Oscars than Timothée Chalamet
Al Pacino’s performance in Scent of a Woman might not have deserved the Oscar for Best Actor over Denzel Washington in Malcom X, but damn it, I love this performance & I love this film. Pacino’s emotional range in this film is off the charts. It’s a reminder of how electric he was in the ‘90s. This also includes one of the best monologues of all time.

John Stewart’s backstory was done so well & Aaron Pierre just continues to impress me with everything he does. If you’re watching, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Kyle Chandler is also excellent.

Cinema & revenge have always gone hand in hand because a character’s quest for revenge has so much emotion - there’s such a release for those of us in the audience as we witness said revenge unfold. My favorite revenge story? Kill Bill. I was introduced to these films at such a formative age, it will be hard for any revenge story to surpass either of these films. Why didn’t Uma Thurman receive Oscar consideration for this @TheAcademy? Kill Bill is my pick.

City of God earned 4 Oscar nominations, which include Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography & Best Film Editing. International films have always been a blind spot of mine & since running this account, I’ve really tried to emphasize watching more international films. City of God was a turning point for me. It changed my expectations of what Cinema could achieve & exposed me to just how ripe Brazil is for Cinema. This is a film I wish every single person on Earth would watch.

It’s been over 7 years without a Quentin Tarantino film & there’s no end in sight. I feel like I’m shouting into the abyss at this point: is there anyone out there? Can anyone hear me? I would give just about anything to see Leonardo DiCaprio & Quentin Tarantino reunite. It’s something about DiCaprio I really appreciate - he has a history with all of the premier directors in the game right now, just short of David Fincher. I think his bond with QT is as good as it gets. QT, if you can hear these, we could use another.
