5 THINGS I LEARNED WORKING WITH @Codie_Sanchez I was very fortunate to work with Codie on her latest book, Own or Be Owned (out today). I’ve learned a ton from her and this experience, and wanted to share: 1. She executes faster than any entrepreneur I’ve worked with We'd be mid-conversation about an idea. She'd like it, pick up her phone, call the person who could build it, and it existed by end of day. I lost count of how many times that happened. Most people write things down or wait for a meeting. She dispatches and gets it done. 2. She embraces criticism I pushed back on a lot of ideas. Her response: "Thank you, keep doing this, we're going for the best possible product." Many authors at her level stop hearing the word no. She embraced it. 3. She took on a liability because it was better for the reader. We discussed the idea of a fairly complex system related to the book. One that would commit her and her team for years to everything downstream of that decision. A LOT of work. She took it on immediately, because she knew it's what will truly help the people she serves. Watch what an author is willing to be on the hook for. 4. Her voice is the product. The AI machine can clean up a paragraph, but it cannot produce a spirited take or a joke in Codie's style. It simply cannot match her humor. Run a manuscript through enough passes and you get something smooth, competent, and dead. Every pass costs you a little crackle. 5. She's a good person. Someone with a large audience on X dunked on me out of nowhere. Two people checked in on me, and one of them was Codie. She also went to the guy directly and told him he was out of line. Nobody asked her to, nobody saw it. For someone who claims to have low emotional IQ, that seemed pretty damn caring. She wants excellence and results, of course, but she also cares about people. Bonus: The book made me a better owner of my own company. I really enjoy working with Codie, but selfishly, I wanted to work on this book for myself. I still use it and it's made me a better owner.
