In a brilliant essay in The Sunday Times, Matthew Syed writes the following: “If extremism is defined as acting out of proportion with context, history or consent, I suggest Merkel’s tenure represented the high point of postwar European extremism.” I agree with Syed’s analysis. But there is one aspect of Merkel’s legacy to which we need to pay particular attention. In Merkel’s own country, Germany, the political centre is collapsing. Nationwide opinion polls suggest that the three establishment parties that rebuilt Germany after the Second World War now command the support of only around a third of the electorate between them. Nor is Germany the only country where the political centre is collapsing. The same is happening in France - a development that puts the future of the centre at issue in next year’s presidential election. In my view, Angela Merkel bears a grave responsibility for the collapse of the centre and the growing ability of the political extremes to set the agenda. The almost one-third of voters who would support Alternative für Deutschland in a national election are not fascists or Nazis. A substantial proportion are disillusioned CDU voters. What has disappointed these voters? First, what I see as Merkel’s failures on so many fronts: immigration. Security. Energy. A sustainable strategy for business and economic growth. Digitalisation. Infrastructure maintenance. The list is almost endless. Second, the extraordinary denial of reality that, in my assessment, Merkel allowed to take hold when it came to immigrants’ responsibility for antisemitism, violence against women, terrorism and gang crime. Coming from Denmark, where we have reliable statistics on all these matters, I find it frankly shocking to listen to the nonsense coming from Germany’s political elite. But I would also trace back to Merkel the rise of what is often called “Islamo-leftism” - a tendency that has recently gained ground in Sweden and is also growing in Germany. In Sweden, polls have indicated that 85 per cent of Muslim voters support parties to the left of centre, with almost one in five supporting the Left Party, Vänsterpartiet - a party tainted by antisemitism and the glorification of terrorism. I see no compelling reason to assume that the pattern in Germany is fundamentally different. My argument, then, is that it is not only the rise in support for the AfD that can be traced back to Merkel. The same applies to the growing support for parties on the German left that promote the political and religious views of a significant proportion of the people, Merkel invited to Germany. Not least on the Gaza question. Merkel’s role in Europe’s political destabilisation deserves far closer scrutiny. We need to discuss this openly and honestly. Otherwise, we cannot understand why the political centre is collapsing in so many countries today.

There has been much said about Ursula von de Leyen’s state of the European Union Address and the embrace of Mark Carney with an invitation to become the first associate member of the European Union. Firstly, it’s important to understand that this is in this moment, a symbolic message of solidarity in recognition of the joint intention of middle powers not to bend the knee to the mob boss in the White House. There is a common understanding that Europe and Canada are stronger together in the face of extortion attempts by a geopolitical bully and his persistent extortion attempts. Mark Carney is smart, his economic pedigree is testament to his deep understanding of the geopolitical and economic machine. It places him in pole position when it comes to navigating the threat that Trump presents. His calm polite demeanour and charm is an important weapon in his expansive armoury. He’s the quiet but never to be underestimated figure a damaged world is willing to gather around for direction, and this is absolutely vital in this moment. After the EU meeting he arrived in the UK because he knows the UK is also a key component of this attempt to redefine a world order. The recognition of the need to create a new order resilient to threats from an adversarial US. In that respect, he will find Andy Burman a true ally and staunch advocate for his vision of a world where gunboat diplomacy does not rule. We are in the early stages of a world waking up to the threat of a nation once seen as a friend. A friend that has lost its way thanks to a criminal malignant narcissist in the Oval Office. Nobody is writing the US off, but we are moving into a new era where trust is not a given, it has to be earned. When Trump is in jail or attempting to relive his fantasy through his ludicrous Bored of Peace (yes I deliberately spelt it wrong), we can hopefully move on. Trust will sadly never be unconditional ever again thanks to what Trump has done, but Mark Carney represents a world that wants to move on to redefine partnerships based on trust and common objectives. A world that can deliver for the greater good. In the darkness, the deliberate uncertainty and state of perpetual anxiety Trump has delivered to the world, the Canadian 🇨🇦 Prime Minister is the new beacon of common sense, empathy and competence that will help lead the way to a better tomorrow and I could not be happier for the great of Canadian people that it’s their guy that’s taking the lead role in the birth of a better tomorrow. Trump is a political dead man walking. Soon the threats of crimes against the English language, grammar and joined up sentences will be no more. We won’t have to listen to his insufferable blathering and TACO threats. World leaders won’t have to watch the global village idiot attempting to convince them nobody knows stuff better than him, as he farts and falls to sleep in meetings. He will soon be just a skid mark in history, a failed legend in his own lunch hour providing rich pickings for comedy film makers for generations to come. It will likely take a generation to repair the catastrophic damage he’s caused, but in the meantime I believe we will have a dynamic set of middle power leaders to steer us back to the path of delivering for the common good. Yes, I’m optimistic because I believe in the mighty power of the human spirit. We have overcome adversity many times in history and we WILL prevail again. It’s now in the hands of the American people to send a message to the world in November that they can read the room. It’s time to return the soul of America back into the arms of ‘We the people’.
