honestly, the recent openai story has made me way more curious about astra. apparently the older models were able to build a network and hack hugging face, and then a newer model came along, found what they had done, continued the work and ended up getting admin access to part of openai’s infrastructure. the interesting thing isn’t even the hack itself. it’s that the next model was capable of understanding and continuing something the previous models had started. if that’s even remotely representative of what astra can do, we’re probably underestimating it. the computer-use stuff sounds especially crazy, and sam altman has apparently said he expects this generation to be the first capable of inventing things that actually matter.

“actually if you calculate our efficiency correctly, our contribution was more than 5% 🤡” who gives a shit? what a fucking circus. you’re still taking the model away from paying users because you don’t like the company they’re using it through. just own the decision. this is petty, childish shit. and it’s exactly why i want open-source AI to succeed so badly. i don’t want AI becoming something where a few executives get to decide who can use what model, through which product, and under what conditions.

sam altman is such a terrible, terrible person. genuinely, what an opportunistic dirtbag. this whole thing feels incredibly petty, and i really don’t think it changes much about spacex’s trajectory or cursor’s future. openai spent months positioning itself as the lab that wanted developers to build freely on its models. now this. it feels like a completely different company. if anything, it just gives spacex even more incentive to go all-in on its own stack. the battle between these labs is clearly heating up, and openai looks increasingly concerned about what spacex is building.

we’re getting dangerously close to the point where you don’t have to keep telling AI what to do. gpt astra is reportedly designed for tasks that can run for days or weeks, while remembering feedback, coordinating multiple agents and actually operating software on your computer. give it a complicated project and it can keep pushing through the work instead of stopping after one response. and openai apparently wants the eventual version to just keep running indefinitely.

Ultimately we see a path to maybe launching as much as a terawatt per year of compute from Earth. But if you want to go beyond a terawatt per year, you have to go to the moon. By having factories on the moon building AI satellites, and having a mass driver — something you usually only read about in science fiction but we’re going to make it real. If you do that, you can go several orders of magnitude greater, to 1,000 gigawatts or more per year, and ultimately maybe even a few percent of the sun’s energy. It’s difficult to imagine what an intelligence of that scale would think about, but it’s going to be incredibly exciting.”
