36 years ago today, another barrier in our country’s battle for civil rights was knocked down with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Your family is my fight, and that means protecting people with disabilities from discrimination and ensuring they have the same opportunities to succeed as everyone else.

Earlier today, I spoke with the family of Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad and heard stories about the remarkable young woman they loved. Their strength in the face of tragedy moved me deeply and reinforced what New Yorkers already know: Sgt. Rampersad served our nation with extraordinary courage and made the ultimate sacrifice.   That is why I’m outraged to see her removed from the Pentagon’s official accounting of those killed in the Iran war. The Trump administration does not get to revise the human cost of this war because it has become politically inconvenient. Sgt. Rampersad gave her life in service to this country. Changing a website does not rewrite the truth of her sacrifice.   New Yorkers and the American people deserve a full explanation. I’m calling on the Pentagon to immediately restore Sgt. Rampersad’s name to its official accounting of those killed in the Iran war.

Today, New York State told 12 law enforcement agencies it’s time to end their 287(g) agreements with ICE. Public safety is strongest when local cops are focused on local crime.

My heart is with her family, loved ones, and the soldiers who stood beside her as they grieve this unimaginable loss. Sgt. Rampersad lived a life of courage and selflessness. May we honor her memory, remember her sacrifice, and keep all who loved her in our prayers.

As the granddaughter of Irish immigrants, I am heartened to see the Supreme Court's decision rejecting the Trump administration's cruel attack on birthright citizenship. For generations, immigrants have come to New York in search of freedom and opportunity, helping build the strongest, most vibrant state in the nation. The Statue of Liberty stands proudly in our harbor, and New York will always stand with those seeking the promise of America.
