i have explained what a stablecoin is at three separate dinner parties this month and i can feel my friends starting to seat me strategically far away.
These 11 onchain neobanks and crypto cards hit new ATHs in August
According to PaymentScan, these 11 projects hit new ATHs in card spending last month:
EtherFi, KAST, Bleap, RedotPay, Kolo, Plasma One, Wirex One, Tuyo, Avalanche, Hyperbeat and VaultLeap
Together, users spent more than $700M through these cards in August
This isn’t a coincidence.
Which card did you use?
founder life is telling investors youre building the future of money on the morning call, then spending the whole afternoon figuring out why one specific bank rejects any address with an apostrophe in it.
money is the only thing i touch all day that still runs on bankers hours. everything else got an api and went instant years ago. wild that we all just accept it.
Hope everyone caught up in the situation gets made whole. Genuinely.
Worth explaining the architecture though, because "be careful where you put your money" isn't the lesson people think it is.
Any card that requires you to pre-load a balance creates a pool that sits there waiting to be spent. Settlement lags, so it sits for days. Whatever can authorize a withdrawal from that pool can reach all of it at once. That's true whether the contract is self-custodial or not.
Just in time is a different shape. Nothing is pre-loaded. Funds move at the moment of authorization, for the exact amount of the purchase, then settle. There's no standing balance to drain.
That's not a claim that one is safe and one isn't. Every model concentrates trust somewhere and you should know where yours is.
The difference is what a failure costs you. Pre-funded fails all at once. JIT fails for one transaction.
Terribly sorry for the team and customers over at Avici. If anyone needs help or support, reach out to the team at VaultLeap - we are on standby to help any affected.
If your neo bank card provider use rain for providing services
There is current exploit
So if you use app that has rain as provider for credit card
REMOVE THE FUNDS ASAP from the app you use
nobody warns you that running a money company is mostly waiting. on someone else's compliance team. you don't build a neobank so much as wait one into existence.
